June 17 2011 Cabot Trail (starting from Baddeck)

No  photos yesterday due to bad connection  in this motel. Won’t work from our room so have to go up the hill a little and sit under a tree to transmit. Way too cold to sit and down load photos. I will do some when we get to Halifax so check back on the 16th date when I have edited them in.
On the road at 8.20am to do the famous Cabot Trail which loops around  Cape  Breton.  187 miles.  (298 kms) Got back at  4.00pm.  Had lots of stops hence why it took so long. The Trail takes you to lighthouses, fishing wharves, sandy beaches, picnic parks, waterfalls, and not forgetting the fabulous views from high up in the mountains and along sea shores, which we didn’t see due to low sea fog coming in. No wind to blow it away, disappointing but we saw some amazing views with the sea fog  coming  in over the mountains. We were high enough to look down over the top of the fog. Like being in an aeroplane  above  the clouds.  Although we were only 457 m  high. You will see in the photos.
We had to pay $6.50 each to enter the Cape Breton National Park. It’s very well maintained down to even a line across the road where the park roads meet the public roads. The Cabot Trail is not  solely National Park area it also encompasses public roads which are generally very rough.
Lots of lobster fishermen working their boats along the shore line. They don’t go out far at all, keep well in along the coast.  Each fisherman is allowed to put 250 pots down a day. That’s why there are so many lobster.  Boats everywhere. We have decided that we like the snow crab legs better. Very sweet.
Although the weather wasn’t the best ,  (they had predicted sun today)  we still had a good day. The poor locals are having the worst spring in a long while. Hardly seen the sun yet,  and it’s been like this further down the coast where we are going, so hope it starts to change. Such a contrast to the heat we started off with from N.Y. Right through to Quebec  City.

The motel we are in hasn’t been too bad once you get used to it. We are the only people in our block of units so don’t have to worry about people next door as very creaky  floors , and thin walls. They have a nice  cheap  restaurant  overlooking the lake, where we have being having breakfast and dinner .
Lucky we are ahead of the season.  Not  so many people around yet, which is quite nice.
Off to Halifax tomorrow for three nights so will be back to a good connection again. Won’t post this until I get there.  Don’t feel like going up und and sitting under the tree, at eight o’clock at night. Way too cold plenty of mozzies..

Where's my bloody horse gone. Pete loves catching me out taking photos. I had to bend down to take photo under some power lines as per picture below. Gave us a good laugh.

This shows how close to shore the lay their pots.

Just a bay on east coast of trail.

This one shows just how close this fisherman is working his pots. Right in the harbour. Centre of Picture.

Fishing village. See the sea fog on the hills
These three photos are when we were above the sea fog looked quite spectacular. You can see, if the fog had lifted, could have been some great views.
