June 1, 2011 Niagara Falls

Left at 9.30am from New Milford and went back into NY State. Same scenery today but some areas of  farms appeared, nice countryside.  At one stage we came off the highways for a while and passed through some nice towns. Made a change from all the Highway driving.  For a while there it came over really black. Had  a about two minutes  of rain then cleared again and was a perfect  sunny day.
We filled up with Petrol  today $3.959 per gallon which Pete tells me  that an American Gallon is a smaller gallon than our old gallons. It took 9.681 gallons costing US$38.33 for those men that might be interested.
The drumming in the car was starting to drive us mad and as we have another month of driving  we decided to stop at Buffalo ½ hour before Niagara  Falls and take it into Dollar Rental. At first they didn’t seem to be very helpful as they couldn’t change our car as they were  a private owned branch and their cars had to be returned back to their branch. Finally someone tested the car and he found that all the tyres were uneven with bumps in the rubber causing the drumming noise. By now the manager came to our assistance and they all ended up very helpful but still couldn’t replace the car. They arranged for us to take one of their cars to Niagara  for the two days we  were there , and they had arranged ( with the La Guardia  branch where we had picked  the car up from)  to have all four tyres replaced and we would  go back on Friday and change cars over again. Confused I am.
Really quite inconvenient as wasted 1-1/2 hours in Buffalo and have to go back there on Friday which will be ¾ of an hour each way out of our way. Besides we had crossed over to the Canadian border which cost us about $5.00 so will have to cross over the border twice again on Friday.
Finally arrived at Niagara Falls. Great weather. After checking into The comfort  Inn we went for a walk down Riverside and looked over to the two falls known as the American Falls and The Canadian Falls, (the best falls called the horseshoe falls). The Canadian and American borders run down the middle of  the river making one on the Canadian side and one on the American side. We were walking up high from the river looking down on the falls and walked through the mist of water from the falls. Got quite wet.
We decided just to walk round today and do the touristy things tomorrow.
